La prueba controlada que propone el mago James no ha sido superada por nadie. Las pruebas que tenían que hacer previamente han sido además aprobadas por los aspirantes antes de realizarlas y tras pasar la prueba preliminar, pasan a la siguiente.
La percepción extrasensorial es la capacidad de adquirir información sin que intervenga ningún sentido. Dentro de este campo podemos asociar la telepatía, la clarividencia y la adivinación. Le llaman sexto sentido, este tipo de percepción ofrece información del pasado presente y futuro.Al parecer esta percepción no funciona como un sentido físico y no depende de ningún factor como la geografía, el tiempo, la inteligencia, la edad o la educación.

En aquella época el investigador Kart Zener del Departamento de Psicología de la Universidad de Duke, ideó una baraja de cartas muy especial, las cartas Zener.
Esta baraja estaba dividida en 5 grupos de cartas y cada grupo era una determinada figura, un círculo, un río, una estrella, etc. Las ideó así porque eran figuras fáciles de recordar. El propósito de esta baraja era intentar demostrar la existencia de algún tipo de percepción extrasensorial. El proceso era el siguiente, barajar y seleccionar una carta que se colocaba en la mesa boca abajo para que el sujeto intentara adivinar que tipo de figura contenía.
Todo el mundo puede acertar alguna que otra carta, ya que con 5 figuras son muchas las probabilidades de acertar. El hecho es que hasta la fecha ni cartas, ni estudios, ni nada ha demostrado esta posible percepción. No hay que dejarse engañar por alguien que dice que la posee, muchas personas se benefician actualmente de sus supuestos poderes, charlatanes, avidinos, clarividentes, etc. No hay que darles cuartelillo, ya que son un “sacadinero” que afecta a las pobres personas que creen en algo que no tiene ni la base ni el fundamento adecuados, la ciencia.
